What is an IBC Tote?

An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote is a reusable industrial container designed for storing and transporting liquids and granulated substances. These containers bridge the gap between drums and full tanker loads, offering efficient storage and transport for medium-volume applications.

IBC totes typically consist of a plastic inner tank (bottle), a protective outer cage (frame), and a pallet base for forklift handling. They're designed to be stackable, reusable, and compatible with standard warehouse equipment.

Standard IBC Sizes

While IBC totes come in various sizes, these are the most common:

SizeDimensions (LxWxH)Empty WeightNotes
275 Gallon (1000L)48" L x 40" W x 46" H~130 lbs emptyMost common
330 Gallon (1250L)48" L x 40" W x 53" H~145 lbs emptyMost common
550 Gallon (2000L)48" L x 48" W x 67" H~200 lbs emptyLess common

Component Breakdown

Understanding IBC tote components helps when specifying requirements or assessing condition:

ComponentMaterialDescription
Tank (Bottle)High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)The inner container that holds the liquid. UV-stabilized, food-grade available.
Cage (Frame)Galvanized or Stainless SteelProtective outer frame that provides structural support and allows stacking.
Pallet (Base)Steel, Plastic, Wood, or CompositeThe base that allows forklift handling and supports the container.
Valve (Outlet)Polypropylene or Stainless SteelDischarge valve, typically 2" or 3" butterfly or ball valve.
Lid (Cap)HDPE with GasketTop opening for filling, usually 6" or 8" diameter with screw-on cap.

Pallet Types

The pallet (base) is an important consideration:

  • Steel Pallet: Most durable, best for heavy-duty use. Can be repaired. Heaviest option.
  • Plastic Pallet: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant. Good for clean environments. Cannot be repaired.
  • Wood Pallet: Least expensive. May be required for export. Limited reusability.
  • Composite Pallet: Combines benefits of steel frame with plastic deck. Middle ground option.

Chemical Compatibility

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is compatible with most common substances:

Water
Food products (oils, syrups)
Most acids (dilute)
Alkalis and bases
Alcohols
Detergents
Strong oxidizers
Aromatic solvents
Chlorinated solvents

Stacking Specifications

  • Empty: Up to 4 high (check manufacturer specifications)
  • Full: Typically 2 high maximum
  • Weight Limit: Check cage rating, typically 4,400-5,500 lbs static load
  • Requirements: Level surface, containers in good condition, proper alignment

Choosing the Right Size

Consider these factors when selecting IBC tote size:

  • Volume needs: How much product do you need to store or transport?
  • Space constraints: Do you have height restrictions in your facility?
  • Handling equipment: Do you have forklifts that can handle the weight?
  • Transportation: How many totes fit on your truck or trailer?
